Winter is upon us. Unlike in the summer, when you can get away with fashion over function, this season is very nearly the opposite... not quite though. This is the time of year to thaw out the bank account and look as cool as the weather feels

Trench coats

Autumn is possibly the most diicult time of year to dress stylishly. The main factor in the style problem is how to dress appropriately cool in this tricky season. Layers are the key so you do not over commit to either winter or summer wear. To be well-dressed is a must for anyonewho values their appearance, therefore follow our autumn style guide and blow, rain and shine the fashion faux pas away.

A  good  choice  that  will  never  go  out  of style. A trench coat, or trenchcoat, is a raincoat made of a waterproof heavy-duty cotton drill or poplin, wool gabardine, or leather. Burberry basically  invented  the  trench, and  they still do  it very nicely. The  feeling is  that a good  raincoat  serves as a mildweather overcoat and you can wear  it  just about any  time  there’s enough chill  in  the air. Our suggestion would be to tie the belt in front, because then it gives you a noticeable waist  (women particularly should use it), which accounts for a lot of the charm of the  trench. You  could use  the buckle, but that looks a little buttoned-up, or even anal.

Camel coats

For those who want to add a little movie-star glamour  to  their winter wardrobe, a camel coat could be  the  answer.  This  sumptuous colour suits most skin  tones and is  a  softer  alternative  to  black.
Choose  a  three-quarter  length, belted style  if you want glamour, or  opt  for  a  classic  crombie  to smarten up your office look.

Versatile Turtleneck

If  you had  to organize  your wardrobe by  season,  you would probably put your  turtlenecks  in  the winter section. And although  it  is unlikely  that you’ll be strolling down to the beach in a wool pullover and your boardshorts, turtlenecks can be more than just a chunky sweater for the cold winter months.
Men’s turtlenecks particularly are a great item for cool days, but fine-knit luxurious fabrics and slim-fitting styles make them equally suitable for a night at the bar or a day on the slopes.

Tweed Jackets

Tweed is back, but take care in how you wear it. The  tweed  jacket  can be  refreshing and cool, but  it needs  to be done  right. Tweed gets a bad  rap  from old  school professors who wear  it with patches on  the elbows.  It can be worn with style. People tend to think of tweed as “country” wear, where sophisticates sip on cognac and smoke pipe tobacco while wearing a  fine  tweed  jacket, however  If you want  to do  tweed  in  the city at night, you may be able to pull it off with the right fit and complementary clothes.

Double-breasted Coat

The style  for  this non-committed season should be worn  in a casual  way  and  look  young.  These coats are  to be worn over a suit, and  more  and  more  a  topcoat can  be  a  cool  thing  to  wear  on the weekend.  If you won’t  try  the double-breasted suit, the doublebreasted coat  is a cool  thing because  once  you  button  it  up,  it keeps you twice as warm. The important thing for a double-breasted  coat  is  it  has  to  fit,  it  has  to fit  slim  and  that  actually  keeps you warmer because  it prevents the  wind  from  coming  up.  With tweeds,  camel,  cashmere  and solids the choice is yours.

Varsitv Cardigan

These  are  not  your  typical  cardigans. At  the  point  of maturity  in  an  adult’s  wardrobe,  one should  have  cardigans.  This  is a  chance  for  you  to  buy  something  that makes  a  nod  to  that varsity  jacket.  These  are  collegiate,  that’s  a  cool  thing.  It doesn’t mean go back to university, it means you can look like a cool, young, hip-thing. They add robustness  and  colour.  They are  graphic  and,  again,  slimcut.  They  are  strong  enough  to
wear on their own. Do not hiding these underneath a coat.

Bomber Jackets

Run, don’t walk, to your favourite style shop and put down some cash for a black leather bomber jacket. The bomber jacket has just the right style: It was popularized by  fighter pilots during World War  II and gave  the Army-Navy a style edge (not  that  it was probably needed during a war, but plenty of  lonely housewives in the 50s would probably disagree). The 2011 version  is any colour (ditch the Indiana Jones  look though!) with  just enough military details to keep the macho mojo going. Women can also look unspeakably sexy in this male orientated piece.

MALE

For a man, a bag is like a tool belt for the business site. For a woman a bag is an extension of her creature comforts. Both sexes need to carry a phone or two, documents, newspapers (read - ipad if you are up to date), essential cosmetics and maybe the odd personal item, however that flyer from the new gym has no place in your bag, or even your home for that matter, colleagues won’t be impressed with your enthusiasm and the inevitable trying to impress sentence “Oh, I forgot all about this. Have you seen it?” 
If you are a man then ditch the idea that you are a woodsman on his way for a days work in the forest. Leave the rucksack at home. Keep it for hiking, not the walk to a business meeting. If you are a woman, please do not treat your bag as a suitcase, there are times, for sure, that you will need to be prepared for the apocalypse or a drastic make-up fail, however in a business environment sleek and sophisticated wins over ‘mom of the Year’.

Briefcase
Briefcases are probably the oldest form of “acceptable” handbags for men. Modern-day briefcases, however, have evolved a great deal since the days of your father’s sharp-cornered case. They’re no longer boxy; in fact, that’s about the only traditional element discarded in the modern briefcase. The classic shape (without the sharp corners), buckles, leather exterior, and practical interior compartments help make this bag a timeless addition to any working-man’s wardrobe.

Messenger bag
Aptly named, the messenger bag is designed after the bags traditionally carried throughout history by - whom else? - Messengers. Often made from canvas and swung across the shoulder, messenger bags have taken on a whole new meaning in urban fashion. From students with canvas bags to urban hipsters with modern leather bags, the messenger’s laid-back style will always have a classic casual flair, but today’s leather messenger tote also exudes a hint of uptown sophistication.

Holdall
Any travelling man needs a holdall for those weekend jaunts or three-day business trips. Big, bulky luggage has transformed into sleek, stylish holdalls (or carryalls). Its design is inspired by the duffel bag, but its predominantly leather exterior and more refined appearance attribute a classic look to this practical tote.
Use: Appropriate if you work-out after/during work

Tote
A tote is the modern approach to the classic briefcase. Resembling an artisan’s bag, the tote is the utmost in casual business attire. Its basic design and usual soft leather exterior allots it a classic status, while its long handles give it a contemporary edge. If purchased in a chocolate brown or black, this bag can add a touch of laid-back masculinity to any casual work wear.

Tote
Totes are often called a carry bag. They are used to hold personal belongings that are too large for a purse. Casual and practical at the same time, they should be an accessory staple. Most women use them for their daily hang outs as they are comfortable, but they can be a very stylish addition to your look.

A clutch is intended to be carried in the hand because it has no handles, although they look very sexy casually held between the elbow and ribs. Satchel
Basically a handbag that has one, sometimes two, large straps that go over one shoulder and across the body. This type of handbag is most appropriate for women who work in a busy office. Use of this handbag should be to carry important files and not to knock people out of the way on the way to and from work. Although, fashionistas know the use of a satchel is not only to hold bulky files.

Large and with practical compartments where you can place several necessary items such as a scarf, change of shoes and other items that you may need on an average work day. After all not every day is the same.

Hobo
Another typically large bag and defined by a crescent shape designed to be carried over the shoulder. Do not be put off the name. Hobo handbags are feminine and stylish by design, and can be a real eye-catching accessory.

We’re seeing everything from chunky, wooden sandals to suede lace-up boots this spring. Sporty wedges, strappy wedges - lemon, sunshine and saffron are all big colours for spring. Some of the platform sandals are reminiscent of Japanese traditional shoes - only higher and trendier, with colourful blocks and monochromatic contrasting colours. Bright heels are also making a statement this spring. Pattern heels are also a big hit - no more plain and boring!

Spring 2011 fashion is all about bold colours, colour-blocked knits, and monochrome, simple shapes. The 70s are back, once again, but with chic silks that scream, ‘spring!’ Minimal trends make use of maximum colour - pile on vivid, colour-blocked hues with simple shapes and high-impact accessories. Or try wearing a hip A-line-shape coat in a bright, cheeky yellow. Monochrome is having its moment. You can’t go wrong with head-to-toe coral on red. Looking for extra spark? Throw on day-glo accessories such as a citrushued handbag and heels.

With the warmer weather comes the need to update your sunglasses collection with a new and on-trend style. For Spring 2011 the best accompaniment to a vintage-inspired look is a shape that screams 50s/60s glamour.

OK, so we still have a couple of cold and dreary months ahead of us..but what better time to start planning ahead for the warmer months?  This year’s women's top Spring Fashion trends include soft and sexy details with an emphasis on femininity – off the shoulder tops, layering with sheer materials, lots of whites and neutrals and ruffles and lace

Clean & Pure

Minimalism is on the top of the list for the trends of Spring 2011. That means simple silhouettes, clean lines and softer colour palettes. In fact this season’s colour appears to be no colour at all. Among the scores of designers who unveiled their Spring collections at the end of last year, a striking number concentrated on looks with scarcely any colour. The dominant tones for this spring and summer, in collections including those of Donna Karan, Alexander Wang and G-Star, are solid white, beige, ivory, khaki, olive, oatmeal and terracotta.

Lovely in Lace

No, it's not new, but like all trends that span multiple seasons, it has evolved. Lace influences for Spring tend more to the classic side with quality antique-style fabrics being the key to the trend. There is less of the all-over, stretch lace and more of the unique approach with unusual weaves and designs.

Sheer Style

Sheer tops and dresses are a breezy Spring fashion piece that will keep you looking cool and fresh. Expect to see designs featuring layer upon layer of translucent clothing, revealing equal doses of subtlety and taste. This trend's sheer fabrics range from a gentle sorbet hue to a distinctly neutral palette. Sheer tops and dresses are made of sensual lightweight materials - silks, chiffons and thin cottons - that are comfortable and versatile. Chic. Classy. Sexy.

Clogs

Ever since Chanel sent clogs down the runway it’s been a ‘clog frenzy’. OK, clunky wooden shoes don’t sound like the most glamorous or practical of footwear trends, but this fashion item reached new heights in 2010 and will continue into 2011. Heeled versions are by far the best, (flatties look waaaaay to much like Crocs!); and not just any heel but one of good proportion. Bright leathers are fun but for Spring why not experiment with lighter fabrics like canvas or linen, as well as open-toed styles.

Kitten heels

Kitten heels are making a return spurred on by the trend of '50s and '60s dressing. More comfortable yet less appealing than their higher counterparts, kitten heels can work particularly well when dainty, pointed, and either retro-inspired or minimalist. When it comes to this style in 2011 it's all about the theming. For Spring, kitten heeled sandals are also an option. (For those who aren’t in the know, kitten heels occupy the space between flat shoes and high heels. They're a small slender heel of five centimetres or less. The heel usually  curves inwards from the back of the heel, giving them a bit more stability than a stiletto.)

Biker clothing

As of spring 2011 the military fashion trend will have been with us for over a decade. And for that decade it's been great, we've loved it, but 10 years later we have to admit Spring 2011 is the time to move on. The question is: what do we move on to? The answer: the trend that's been living in its shadow, waiting for its moment of glory...the biker trend.

You can look like a million bucks with gloves. It might remind you of your grandma or the old ladies with their matching bucket hat and oversized coats, but if you mix it with modern pieces you can look up-to-date and sophisticated. Two hot glove fabrics this season are leather and suede in black (of course, a classic), dark brown, tan brown, deep purple and olive green. Make sure you buy genuine leather as it will last a very long time.

Add a little vintage charm to your modern-cut outfit! Soften a black sweater and dress pants with a cute charm bracelet or necklace. Avoid wearing other frilly accessories with the charms. Instead, go for simple earrings, leather belt and shoes. You can also mix the charms with chain jewellery together for an interesting and slightly edgy style blend. Also try pearls.

The trench coat has been around for many, many years and this winter it is one of the hottest trends. It is capable of being re-imagined in an infinite number of ways - shrunken to jacket length and crossed with the soonto-be-ubiquitous utility jacket, decorated with gilt buttons, worn with skinny crop pants or romantic lace dresses.

With fashion putting an emphasis on the masculine styles, heavy ring ornamentation is the perfect way to maintain that feminine quality. Wear rings – lots of rings – on every  finger!! Layer them as well to achieve a hippie sort of look. But instead of extreme bling, try using more subdued stones such as onyx, garnet, and turquoise.

This season turtlenecks and high collars encapsulate a good number of designs, yet there is still room for the scarf. Light airy fabrics in animal print and displaying metallics add a pop, especially when worn with blazers. Winter pronounces much thicker, over-sized knitted scarves that keep the warmth in.

Leather remains dominant in everything from jackets to leggings to shoes to accessories, and let’s not forget – dresses. Don’t count on achieving a biker chick look with these dresses, however. The clean lines and silhouettes bring on a very sophisticated and feminine quality.

The turtleneck is extremely versatile, easy to wear and chic. Layering your outfit with a bold turtleneck will definitely give you a high impact. Turtleneck dresses are a key piece to have during the winter months as they provide protection from the cold yet pose and exquisite look. 

Push that wimpy little lightweight sweater to the back of the closet this season. This winter, seduction comes in the form of the oversized knits. The newest sweater silhouette is an oversized sweater cardigan. Hitting anywhere from below the hip to knee-length, the chunky oversized sweater is the perfect cosy option for cooler days; it is also perfect for indoor offices that are too chilly to go sweaterless.

Wear your oversized cardigan sweater with slimmer bottoms: skinny jeans or leggings tucked into tall boots.  

Cut out and sheer for winter? No, we haven’t got our seasons mixed up. Yes, sheer pieces are in for the cold months. Mixed with fine laces, the sheer trend in 2010 mixes elegance with sex appeal – and isn’t that the current, overarching theme to all fashion trends? Have the confidence to mix your sheer clothing with other trends and key looks and you’ll be onto a winner.
