Europe without Barriers
The Czech Republic will assume the EU Presidency on 1 January 2009. It will take
over this role from France, and pass it on to Sweden
The institutions as well as the politicians in the Czech Republic are preparing
themselves for an important half year. The region of the Western Balkans
represents one of the priorities of Czech foreign policy. The presidency will
thus allow Czech foreign policy to influence European policy towards the Western
Balkans. What the priorities will be and how the Czech presidency will influence
the policy of the EU towards the western Balkans remains to be seen. What is the
current situation of preparations for Serbia to join the EU and what can Serbia
expect from the Czech presidency?

Interview: Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Vuk Jeremić |

Year of Consolidation
“This was a year of great turbulence. Serbia fought very hard in the diplomatic
arena to alleviate the affects of this turbulence and I think we were reasonably
successful. ”
An interview with Minister Jeremić for CorD magazine has been in the pipeline
for over a month. Regardless of old friendships with individuals from the
Minister’s staff, we didn’t manage to get the interview sooner, since his busy
schedule was booked solid. An opportunity to conduct an interview came up
unexpectedly after he returned from Moscow, where he’d attended the funeral of
Patriarch Alexei.

Serbia is not alone
2008 was the year in which the citizens of Serbia made it known their clear
vision of their country’s future, and the lengths they were prepared to go to
achieve it
In Presidential, local and parliamentary elections Serbia said a clear “no”
to indefinitely clinging to the past. Serbia publicly recognized that its
prosperous future lies only in joining the EU. For the first time in history
Serbia is being governed by a pro-European President and a pro-European
Government
